Inspiring children’s lifelong passion, involvement and love of football.
Developing individuals to be the best that they can be
SW Coaching provides a safe, fun, friendly and fair football learning environment where all children feel valued, respected, supported and all are encouraged and challenged to express themselves to develop skills to unleash their potential.
Our coaching philosophy and approach is more than just a football education and experience for young players. Yes, players will improve and become better, technically, tactically, socially and psychologically through continual practice, self development and input from our coaching. More importantly and fundamental to their development, is that players will become more rounded and grounded individuals through our influence and coaching. Delivering on our beliefs will set the foundations for a player’s improvement and success whatever standard they play today or in the future as they grow up.
We believe strongly in serving the local and wider community with pride, honesty, respect... and support all talent in whatever form it may appear. We don't sell dreams or make false promises to kids however we have the experience and can offer support should opportunities arise.
WE COACH LIFE SKILLS
How we coach player development
We appreciate and understand that all players come to us from different starting points and each has their own preferred learning style. Throughout our coaching sessions we continuously challenge players to learn skills that will help them both in playing football and their wider lives:
Communication skills, leadership, respect for others, learning from others team ethic,
personal ownership and responsibility
Develop gross multi skills, co-ordination, core stability, balance, agility, running, kicking, jumping
Dribbling, ball control, passing, receiving, attacking, finishing, defending, tackling and goalkeeping
(all players are encouraged to be two footed)
Composure, patience, self expression, confidence, creativity, determination, positive mindset, decision making, spatial awareness, resilience and overcoming the fear of failure
We understand our role is at the very beginning of a child's football journey and they’ll be encouraged to have confidence mastering a football. They will be encouraged to be creative, make decisions and try things without fear. The opportunity to learn more about positions within a TEAM and roles for goalkeepers, defenders, mid-fielders, attacking and playing games comes with time, patience, perseverance and knowledge.
For the last 20yrs, Shaun Weatherhead (former professional footballer), has been instrumental in the design and delivery of personal development programmes within the health & fitness industry, business sector and primary school education. Highly respected and fiercely passionate about human performance, his mission is to ignite children’s potential through football inspired programmes that transform their confidence, skills and abilities. Most importantly instill a lifelong passion and love for the game built on solid foundations of FUN, RESPECT, ATTITUDE, GRATITUDE, RESPONSIBILITY, INTEGRITY, HONESTY, RESILIENCE and WORK ETHIC.
Growing up, like so many children who play football today, I loved nothing more than to have a football at my feet, kicking a ball around with my mates, practicing my skills and ‘keepy uppies’….with one dream and burning desire… to become a professional footballer.
Fortunately for me; in 1987, I fulfilled my lifetime dream and at 16yrs left school to become an apprentice footballer with my home town club Huddersfield Town. For the next 3yrs; 2 as an apprentice and 1yr professional, between 1987 -1990, I learned so much more about myself than any football, and the values I learned; beyond the major influence of my parents, began shaping me as a person and ultimately influenced me to become the person I am today.
Following a season at York City in 1990 -1991, I had the enormous privilege of traveling the world for the next 3yrs, playing football in Hong Kong, China, Vietnam and finally South Africa, experiencing many different cultures and coaching methods; some different, some revolutionary, with 2 memorable highlights in my career. First, playing in front of 85,000 people at the FNB Stadium in South Africa, for Witbank Aces v Orlando Pirates and second, coaching young kids in the townships of Soweto, Atteridgeville and Mamelodi…truly unforgettable!
In 1993, I returned home and after a brief spell at non league Accrington Stanley, (‘who are they…exactly!’) at 23yrs old, I finished my career due to injury. For a short period, life after football was a challenge - as I knew nothing else, but after support from friends, family and others I rediscovered my motivation and purpose…and began my first steps into the personal development industry. For the last 12yrs I’ve worked in the education environment and motivated over 60,000 school children age 5 -11yrs across the North of England.
My aim is to inspire, motivate and excite young people to develop a thirst for learning new skills and a lifelong passion for the greatest game on the planet.
I look forward to welcoming you to SW Coaching.

Finlay Spencer, aged 8
Cool, calm and collected. An inspirational coach who seems to be able to keep a group of energetic young footballers focused and entertained whilst having the time to monitor each individually. He’s ready to praise, when praise is due, and criticism is always constructive and checked that it is understood. I can see Finlay and his squad going from strength to strength with Sean; they respect him as a coach and what he has to offer in order to improve their skills.

Parents of Joe U11’s and Chris U9’s @ HTJFC
Since Shaun has become our son’s regular Football Coach at Holmfirth Town Junior Football Club, it has been fantastic not only to watch our son’s “Joe”
enthusiasm for football training and matches go up several notches but also watching how their confidence and self-belief is developing.
A massive and sincere “Thank You” Shaun………………….
Ben - Parent of 8 year old pupil who has recently worked with Shaun.
"Shaun has been a hugely inspirational figure/coach for my son, prior to meeting Shaun, we had issues with self-confidence, self esteem and sense of purpose. This has been transformed with regular weekly coaching sessions with Shaun, the secret to the success has been Shaun’s personal style which encompasses clarity, encouragement and interaction and has really helped with developing our boy. I cannot recommend Shaun highly enough."
Father, Holmfirth Town Under 11s
"My son is a new addition this season to Holmfirth Town Under 11’s and I have to be honest, the level of coaching from Shaun is fantastic, I cannot praise him enough. Shaun’s professional coaching is excellent, he has innovative ideas which the boys respond brilliantly to. The boys listen, and respect Shaun and that’s all to do with how he is with the boys and how he speaks to them. Shaun will strive to make sure the boys have fun whilst developing their football knowledge and skills. Holmfirth Town are very lucky to have Shaun associated with them."
